David H Thomas – Artist
David Hugh Thomas (born Nhill, Victoria 1959).
Lives in Melbourne, Australia.
Has practiced as an artist for more than 35 years, with a focus on drawing, painting and collage.
He has been exhibiting since the 1980s when he had exhibitions at George Paton Gallery and ACCA in Melbourne, and First Draft in Sydney. In the 1990s he had four shows with William Mora Galleries and lived in New York for five years where his paintings were shown at the Andre Zarre Gallery, The New York Academy of Art, and the Australian Consulate.
Thomas has been the Museum Officer at Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA) since 1999 working closely with the Monash University Collection. At MUMA he has curated exhibitions including Geometer 2002, Who’s Afraid of Red Yellow and Blue 2010, and most recently Space Material 2017.
Since 2005 David has organised the annual Falls Creek Artist Camp, taking over 70 artists to the Australian Alps on a retreat.
Selected solo exhibitions include drawing projects like July, West Space, 2000 and Shocking Blue, TCB, 2002. In 2010 he exhibited paintings at Chapman Bailey Gallery in the exhibition High Country Nights.
Thomas has exhibited in group exhibitions at galleries including the Ian Potter Museum, Heide Museum of Modern Art, Bendigo Art Gallery and Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery. A survey of his drawings Inkling, 16 years of Ink Drawing was exhibited at St Kilda Town Hall Gallery in 2013.
In 2017 he exhibited works on paper in the exhibition Warped Grid at William Mora Galleries.
D.H.Thomas will exhibit his drawings and paintings in the exhibition Basalt Temple to be held at the William Mora Galleries in August 2019.
An artist book, Basalt Temple, containing illustrations of drawings and paintings, photographs of source material and text, has been specially commissioned to coincide with the exhibition and is available at the gallery.
